Pond Scum Anyone?

On the blog a few months ago, I wrote a whole post calling out “superfoods” because of their endless health claims, such as curing allergies and candida, to detoxifying the body and aiding in weight loss. Instead, I encourage everyone to think of single ingredient foods as “superfoods,” such as pumpkin seeds, hemp hearts, legumes, slow burning grains and dark leafy greens.

But as a self proclaimed nutrition nerd, I like trying these unfamiliar and alluring products, so I have a two week supply of Spirulina in my freezer right now!

There might be something to Spirulina, besides being NASA astronaut’s nutrition supplement of choice. Gram per gram Spirulina is an excellent source of protein and iron, jam-packed with antioxidants and chlorophyll and is even an anti-inflammatory! But keep in mind, we’re only using a small amount at a time.

Due to its growing popularity, Spirulina is cultivated in ponds (aka pond scum) and mass-produced all over the world. Contamination by toxins and heavy metals is a serious concern, so it is important to choose a good Spirulina supplement. A great Canadian Spirulina is “Spiruvive”.

Recipe Roundup:

I’ll let you know how I feel after two weeks on this green juice! Who loves Spirulina out there?
